Verna was originally a logging camp and station on the Natchez, Columbia and Mobile Railroad. The town had a post office from 1903 to 1937. In 1933 the railroad was abandoned and removed.
Verna Lodge No. 501 received its dispensation in 1908 and was chartered on February 17, 1909. In 1921 it moved eastward along the railroad to the next station, Jayess and changed its name to Jayess Lodge No. 501.
