MASONIC LODGE

  • Summit Lodge No. 231
  • Dispensation 1858
  • Chartered January 18, 1859
  • Meets 4th Thursday at 7:00 P.M.

While the location of the first Lodge building is unknown, it is known that it burned on December 24, 1865. The fire was believed to be the result of arson and a reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of the culprit. It is unknown if a suspect was arrested. The second lodge building was still under construction when it was destroyed by a wind storm on May 28, 1866.

Between 1886 and 1913 the Lodge is known to have met on the 2nd floor of the Jewish synagogue which was located on East Railroad Street on a lot immediately north of the Catholic church. The Catholic church was located on the northeast corner of Baldwin Street and East Railroad Street.

In 1918 the Lodge was known to be meeting on the 2nd floor of City Hall, which was located on the southwest corner of Peters Street and West Railroad.

Between 1925 and 1932 they met in a building they owned in Square 36 lots 9, 10, 11 & 12 being a 33 ft wide strip on the east of of those lots. In 2024 this was a parking lot on the east side of First Bank on Robb Street.

In 1946 they purchased parts of lots 10 and 11 in Square 44 on West Railroad Avenue and built their current building.

ROYAL ARCH MASONS

Summit Chapter No. 90 Royal Arch Masons is part of the York Rite Bodies of Masonry. The chapter was chartered on January 18, 1866 and met in the Summit Lodge building. On April 10, 1910 the chapter moved to McComb City and changed it name to McComb City Chapter No. 90.

ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR

Edith Chapter No. 87 Order of the Eastern Star was formed around 1910. On April 14, 1986 it merged with Auburn Chapter No. 277 forming Auburn Chapter No. 87. The chapter still meets in Auburn on the 3rd Thursday at 7:00 P.M.
