The first Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star in Mississippi was formed on December 15, 1870. During the yellow fever epidemics in 1877 and 1878 the Grand Chapter and most of the Chapters ceased to function. The Grand Chapter was formally closed and jurisdiction transferred to the General Grand Chapter in 1881. It was reported that 26 chapters existed in 1874 and 41 Chapters existed in 1877.
