MASONIC LODGE
Norfield Lodge No. 476 F. & A. M.
UNDER DISPENSATION: May 31, 1905
CHARTERED: February 21, 1906
DEFUNCT: November 9, 1926
- On May 31, 1905 the Grand Master granted dispensation to establish a new lodge in Norfield with the name of Norfield.
- On March 1, 1906 the Grand Master signed the charter for Norfield Lodge No. 476, and appointed R. W. Brother J. A. B. Jones D.D.G.M. to constitute and dedicate same and install its officers. From Grand Masters address 1907
- On April 17, 1924 fire destroyed the Masonic Hall which was located in a building owned by the Denkman Lumber Company
- CHANGING LOCATION OF LODGES: Norfield Lodge, No. 476, from Norfield to Bogue Chitto. From 1925 Grand Lodge proceedings
- Biloxi Sun Herald October 16, 1925: Alleging that they “willfully, designedly and wantonly” caused the loss of the plaintiff’s lodge room, the Norfield Masonic Lodge has brought suit in the Lincoln county circuit court against the Denkman Lumber Company of Norfield and C. L. Freiler, general superintendent, of Norfield, for $7,300 actual and punitive damages. The case will come up in the January term of court. Fire destroyed the Masonic hall on April 17 of last year. Each dispensation requiring legal procedure with reference to change of location, and issued on condition that location would be in a “safe and suitable upper room.”
- Lincoln County Circuit Clerks docket for case 7049 in the January 1926 docket shows the case of Norfield Lodge vs Denkman Lumber Co etal dismissed prior to trial with costs assessed against the plaintiff.
- NORFIELD LODGE: My attention was directed to a very unfortunate condition of affairs existing in Norfield Lodge No. 476. By exhaustive investigation which included several interviews with different Masons in this lodge, I acquainted myself as best I could with all the unfortunate details. The situation finally resolved itself into a civil suit filed jointly against a member of this lodge and his employers. This suit which involved charges of a most serious nature, was filed by the three principal officers of the lodge, in the name of Norfield lodge. Charges of the same nature were also brought against the brother in the lodge. The case assumed such proportions that I was convinced that a Grand Lodge representative should be appointed to preside over the lodge trial, which was to precede the civil trial. Brother John R. Talley, our Senior Grand Warden very graciously complied with my request and presided over this trial which resulted in acquittal of the brother by an overwhelming vote. The lodge minutes failed to show that this lodge had ever authorized civil action against the brother, and in view of this fact and the further fact that Masonry had regularly tried and acquitted the brother, thereby placing our Fraternity in the inconsistent attitude of asking the civil courts to do something the fraternity itself had tried and failed to do, I ordered that Norfield lodge discuss the matter and vote on withdrawal of this suit, at its stated December Communication. This order was communicated to the principal officers by registered mail and return receipts indicate that the letters were received, but neither of these officers appeared at the hall, thereby preventing a regular Communication. Past Grand Master Marsh Hainer whom I had requested to be present at the hall on that night, took an informal vote on the question of withdrawing the suit, after it was apparent that the Master and neither of the Wardens intended to be present. The result of this informal vote was practically unanimous in expression of the desire to withdraw the suit. I arrested the jewels of the three principal officers for contumacy and instructed the secretary to notify the members that the January stated communication would be held under the supervision of Brother Hainer, at which time officers would be elected and installed. Brother Hainer’s report of this meeting is the basis of a bright hope that conditions will steadily improve in this lodge. From Grand Masters address 1926
- NORFIELD LODGE: By referring to the Grand Lodge Proceedings of one year ago you will find a detailed account of the unfortunate condition of affairs existing in Norfield Lodge, No. 476. After an exhaustive effort on the part of the brethren of that Lodge to bring about the proper Masonic relations, but without success, Norfield Lodge, No. 476, on November 9th, 1926, surrendered its Charter and property to the Grand Lodge. Those members thereof in good standing at the time will no doubt file application at this annual Communication for certificates of membership, and I recommend that such disposition be made of those applications as will conform to Masonic Law and the pleasure of this Grand Body. From Grand Masters address 1927
- On the 9th of November, 1926, Norfield Lodge, No. 476 surrendered its Charter. Grand Lodge report 1927
- NORFIELD LODGE: We are in accord with that part of the Grand Master’s address relating to the above matter and recommend that the incoming Grand Master investigate such applications for certificates of membership as may be filed by members of this Lodge who were in good standing when the Charter was surrendered, and that he direct the Grand Secretary to issue such certificates in all cases where such members were not in fault. Supplemental report of the Law Committee to 1927 Grand Lodge

NOTE: Charter surrendered
ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR
Emma Westgate Chapter No. 90, Order of the Eastern Star was located in Norfield, Mississippi. It received its dispensation on March 12, 1912, was chartered on July 9, 1912 and went defunct on February 20, 1933.
On June 27, 1932 it’s request to consolidate with Bogue Chitto Chapter No. 263 was not approved but it’s members were invited to demit to Bogue Chitto.
After the Norfield Masonic Lodge burned in 1924, the Chapter relocated to Bogue Chitto and met in the Masonic Lodge there. The Bogue Chitto Lodge burned in 1932 and the Chapter had its charter replaced by the Grand Chapter.
