Jayess was originally a logging camp and station on the Natchez, Columbia and Mobile Railroad. It was named for J. S. Butterfield, President of the railroad and was originally spelled Jay Ess. His whole name was John Spencer Butterfield. In 1933 the railroad was abandoned and removed.
MASONIC LODGE
Jayess Lodge No. 501 was originally formed and located in Verna, Mississippi and was known as Verna Lodge No. 501. In 1921 it moved to Jayess and changed its name. On December 4, 2018 the Lodge surrendered its charter.
EASTERN STAR
Jayess Chapter No. 343 Order of the Eastern Star was chartered on April 17, 1950. On March 30, 1959 the charter of the chapter was arrested by the Grand Chapter. The reason for the arrest is not mentioned in the annual proceedings but it appears the chapter had not been represented at the annual proceedings for the past four years and may have been inactive.
