Town of Bogue Chitto, Mississippi Cemetery

The first known burial in the Bogue Chitto Cemetery is that of Anna Belle Thompson. The daughter of Alexander Ephraim Thompson and Coriolanus Ann Pepper Thompson died at age 7 on September 26, 1876 and was buried on land owned by the Sutton family.

In 1880 the Sutton family deeded all of what was described as Block 9 Suttons Addition, Porters Survey to the Town of Bogue Chitto for use as a cemetery. The cemetery is 400 feet by 337 feet and is bordered by Lee Drive, South Street, Morgan Street and Brister Street. The physical address is 2410 Lee Drive.

Originally South Street was in a deep cut on the north side of the cemetery. In 1915 the cemetery stopped selling grave sites in the farthest two rows to the north due to erosion on the edge of the road. In the 1920’s the fence was moved southward about 15 feet leaving two rows and the northern walkway outside the fence. There were five known graves that were outside the new fence and they were unmarked at that time. Since then three of the graves have been marked. In the late 1930’s the county sloped the embankment and that solved the erosion problem.

At one time, Hwy 51 traveled down Lee Street. During that time the town sold the easternmost walkway to allow improvements to the road.

In 1906 the Town established an ordinance placing control of the cemetery in the hands of the Bogue Chitto Cemetery Association. A group that still manages the cemetery. Anyone owning a lot in the cemetery may be a member of the association.
