HISTORY
- John A. Quitman Lodge was named for John Anthony Quitman. John Quitman was born in Rhinebeck, NY on September 1, 1798. He moved to Natchez, MS in 1821 where he practiced law until being elected to state office, holding several positions including governor. He also served as a soldier holding the rank of Major General in the Mexican – American War. He was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 1 in Natchez, MS and was elected the ninth Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi in 1826, a position he held fourteen more times through 1846. He died in Natchez on July 17, 1858.
- John A. Quitman Lodge was originally shown as being located at Smithdale in Amite County. This was later changed to Auburn in Lincoln County. The Lodge never actually moved, but the location was changed as county lines and post offices changed. The original Lodge building was located where Adams Methodist Church is located. In 1924 the church needed to expand and the old building was torn down and the current building built. A brick exterior was later added.
- On the 9th April last, and in obedience to a resolution adopted by your M W G body (printed proceedings, page 42) he issued a Dispensation to J. E. Marsalis, Wm. Thompson, L. L. Weathersby, and others, a constitutional number, for the institution of a new Lodge at the town of Smith Dale, Amite county, to be called John A. Quitman Lodge No. 244.
